A 1.1km (1,203 yard) section of a long-awaited harbourfront boardwalk built beneath an elevated road on Hong Kong Island is set to open to the public by Lunar New Year late next month.

Part of a HK$6.5 billion (US$837.3 million) harbourfront enhancement programme, the project in North Point is a key component of the government’s efforts to develop a 13km pedestrian-friendly promenade connecting Kennedy Town in the west to Shau Kei Wan in the east.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, development minister Bernadette Linn Hon-ho hailed it as “the first seaside boardwalk built under an operating main road”.
The boardwalk, beneath the Island Eastern Corridor, was also praised by the Development Bureau for its “wise use of the space”.
“[It] will bring a new waterfront experience to the public and is of great significance to the harbourfront enhancement work,” the bureau’s post said, citing Linn.
Linn hoped the new boardwalk would become a landmark of the Victoria Harbour waterfront, the post added.
