Rappers 21 Savage, Shou Lou, Novel Fergus set for ComplexCon Hong Kong, first non-US edition of pop culture fest

British-American rapper 21 Savage, Taiwan’s Shou Lou and Hong Kong performers, such as Edison Chen and Novel Fergus, are among the line-up for the city’s coming pop culture festival ComplexCon, the first non-US edition.

The annual event, first launched in Los Angeles in 2016, brings together world-famous urban culture and music artists, with past performers including Snoop Dogg, Selena Gomez and Offset.

ComplexCon’s Asia debut is set to take place from March 22 to 24 at AsiaWorld-Expo in Chek Lap Kok.

It was also among 80 mega events highlighted by the authorities last month to boost tourism.

A rare performance by the 3CORNERZ band -consisting of Edison Chen Koon-hei, MC Yan and Chef – will serve as the opening act, followed by Shou, mainland Chinese singer Lexie Liu and Novel Fergus.

South Korean hip-hop and R&B record label AOMG performers, including Simon Dominic, Loco GRAY, Woo Won-jae and Coogie, will take the stage on the festival’s second day.

Rap sensation 21 Savage will headline the third and final day of the festival on March 24.

“We want to showcase more Asian names this time,” Complex China chief executive officer Bonnie Chan Woo Tak-chi said on Thursday, referring to the festival’s first edition outside California.

‘Unique milestone’: Hong Kong to host ComplexCon’s Asia debut next year

“Not just in terms of musical acts, but also for brands and designers and their products.”

A festival spokesman said more than 200 creators from the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, the mainland and Hong Kong would gather for Complex Marketplace, led by Japanese artist Verdy as artistic director.

Organisers previously said the event was expected to attract about 30,000 guests from all over the region.

Although the festival’s complete line-up has not yet been announced, full-event tickets priced between HK$2,380 (US$304) and HK$4,780 sold out just a few hours after they were released on January 30. Single-day passes will officially go on sale on Friday, ranging from HK$380 to HK$1,280.

Dior fashion show and ‘Chubby Hearts’ among events coming to Hong Kong

ComplexCon Hong Kong is supported by the government’s HK$1.4 billion Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund, which was announced by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu in his policy address last October.

Authorities planned to boost local tourism through large-scale events, such as concerts, conferences and festivals, especially with international stars like Coldplay and Taylor Swift skipping Hong Kong for regional competitor Singapore in their Asia tours this year.

Other March events include the Hong Kong stop of the LIV Golf tournament, Art Basel and the Dior Men’s Fall 2024 fashion show.
