Hong Kong’s CLP Power apologises for early-hours electricity outage

Hong Kong electricity firm CLP Power has apologised after some Kowloon residents experienced an outage in the early hours, attributing it to “unstable weather” that affected its overhead supply system.

The company said a 400kV overhead power supply system connecting Yuen Long to Shenzhen experienced a brief voltage sag at 2.47am on Sunday.

“A thunderstorm warning was in effect during the voltage sag. It is suspected that the 400kV overhead power supply system was affected by unstable weather,” a CLP spokesman said.

The company, which covers Kowloon and the New Territories, stressed that the power supply was not interrupted but customers could have experienced lights dimming or flickering during the voltage dip, while their equipment might have glitched.

The firm said it had received outage reports at a “certain building”.

CLP said it had sent engineers to the scene to carry out an inspection and they were told that the building had arranged for electricians to restart the equipment and restore the electricity supply.

“Our engineers are following up the incident. CLP apologises for the inconvenience to customers,” the spokesman said.
