To send a clear and firm message to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the U.S. plans to use a retired amphibious assault ship, weighing 38,900 tons, as a target ship in the upcoming Rim of the Pacific Exercise. This exercise will practice joint strike operations, aiming to warn the CCP that the U.S. and its allies will not stand by if peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region are threatened. Any reckless actions will come at a high cost.
The U.S. strategy is clear: if the CCP uses force against Taiwan, the coalition’s primary task will be to concentrate superior forces to destroy the CCP’s landing and escort fleets. Should the conflict escalate, the U.S. and its allies are capable of destroying a significant portion of the CCP’s naval combat forces in a short time. This strong deterrent forces the CCP to carefully consider the consequences of its military actions, or risk catastrophic blows to itself.
