At least 9 people hurt in 4 traffic accidents in an hour on Hong Kong highway on first day of Lunar New Year

Four traffic accidents were reported on one major Hong Kong road within an hour on the first day of Lunar New Year, with at least nine people, including a baby, injured.

Police received the first report at 3.07pm about a collision on Tolo Highway in the eastern New Territories involving two private vehicles on northbound lanes to Sheung Shui. One car flipped over.

Two men, three women and an infant were injured in the accident. The baby was said to be bleeding from the nose at the scene.

Just four minutes later, at 3.11pm, police were alerted to another accident on the highway, near Chak Cheung Street, where a male motorcyclist suffered injuries to his arms and legs.

Police said another motorcycle on the highway – which connects Sha Tin and Tai Po, and forms part of the New Territories circular Route 9 – at 3.44pm was sandwiched between two private vehicles, injuring the rider.

Another crash on the highway happened at just before 4pm near Wan Tau Tong Estate in Tai Po where two private vehicles were in collision. One driver reported to police that a passenger had suffered slight injuries.

Police warned that drivers could expect the highway to be very congested.

A Post reporter headed to the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees event was stuck in traffic for nearly an hour as all four lanes towards Tai Po were crowded and moving very slowly.

A visit to the wishing trees is one of Hong Kong’s oldest new year traditions.
