A medical student from Hong Kong’s oldest university has been sentenced to a year’s probation after admitting to secretly filming two hallmates as they showered in a dormitory bathroom.

Chung Chun-yu, 23, earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of voyeurism and told Principal Magistrate David Cheung Chi-wai that his use of a mobile phone to film other students through a hole in a laundry basket at a University of Hong Kong hall of residence last September was a one-off incident.
The defendant said he did not suffer from a voyeuristic disorder but admitted to police that he was attracted to the male body and had made the recordings to satisfy his sexual desires.
Eastern Court heard on Friday that a probation officer’s report found Chung had shown genuine remorse. The magistrate also noted that the student had taken steps to address his issues by undergoing therapy sessions.
“Value this second chance,” Cheung told the defendant as he imposed the probation sentence.
